Wi-Fi / WiMAX metropolitan network launched in Freetown

Sierra Leonean ISP FGC Wireless claims to have launched the first metropolitan Wi-Fi / WiMAX network in Africa, in the capital Freetown, reports Balancing Act Africa. FGC Wireless was established around twelve months ago as a fixed and mobile broadband internet and wireless telephony service provider. The company has carried out a 'topographic deployment' of infrastructure and claims that Freetown is only the third city in the world to be covered by an unrestricted Wi-Fi and WiMAX network after Philadelphia in the USA and Taipei in Taiwan. The editor of local newspaper the Independent Observer, Sorie Sudan Sesay, told news agency Highway Africa that the technology has ‘come in very handy and timely’. He said, ‘We are now able to easily access internet services in our offices; something we woefully lacked in the recent past. This is a wonderful and most welcome development in the newspaper industry in post war Sierra Leone where reliable information dissemination means everything to the continued peace and stability in the country; a sine qua non for development anywhere.’
