Blood Diamonds and Amazing Grace

These two recent films have highlighted the struggles that have taken place to bring freedom from a bloody civil war in Sierra Leone caused by Conflict Diamonds in the 1990s and the end of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in 1807. FREETOWN, the capital of Sierra Leone was established as a Crown Colony for Freed Slaves at the end of the 18th Century, but has had a mixed history, as the film portrays.

However, what is happening in Sierra Leone TODAY? And what are the hopes for the future, as the nation gathers for Elections in July this year? Can a nation be changed? Can it be Transformed? What is the hope and what part can people in UK and elsewhere play?

The keynote speech will address the conference theme, and will be delivered by Canon Dr. Modupe Taylor-Pearce who is currently the Director of DISCET in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He is a former Director of the West African Exams Council, Head Teacher, Deputy Chief Education Officer, Bible College Principal and Canon at St. George’s Cathedral, Freetown. DISCET is a counselling, evangelism and training ministry in post-war Sierra Leone.

Fresh from Freetown, a respected Sierra Leonean leader in church and state Canon Dr. Modupe Taylor-Pearce has been invited to address a major conference “TRANSFORM SIERRA LEONE” on Saturday 21st April from 10am at St.Mark’s Kennington, the OVAL, London.
