Peacebuilding Fund Strengthens Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces

The Executive Representative of the Secretary General, Victor Angelo, has commended the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces for their outstanding qualities and professionalism which has led to maintenance of peace and security in the country.

Victor Angelo made these comments in a brief ceremony at the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces logistics Centre in Murray Town, Freetown, where he handed over some 5,600 bags of rice, fuel, lubricant, medical supplies and stationeries to the Armed Forces.

He rated the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces as “one of the best in Africa, as demonstrated by their integrity and professionalism, with which they have maintained security, during this critical moment in the nation’s history”.

Receiving the items, Brigadier F.K Kamara, representing the Deputy Minister of Defense, registered the Army’s gratitude to the UN and promised to continue the good work they were doing and to remain impartial and neutral ahead of the run-off elections scheduled for 8 September 2007.

In recognition of the country’s progress, the UN Peacebuilding Commission selected Sierra Leone as one of the countries to receive support from the Peacebuilding Fund. To date, seven projects have been approved by the Peacebuilding Fund Steering Committee, totaling USD 16 million out of the USD 35 million grant awarded to Sierra Leone.
