MTC Group Takes Three More Awards

The 2007 CommsMEA Annual Telecom Award Ceremony has seen the MTC Group, the leading mobile telecommunications operator in the Middle East and owner of Celtel in Africa, win three awards.

The awards include Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr. Saad Al Barrak, Overall Operator of the Year, New Telecoms Service of the Year - One Network Dr. Saad Al Barrak, CEO of MTC Group, was honored for his pioneering efforts in the industry at the second annual CommsMEA telecom awards hosted at the Fairmont Hotel, Dubai with a judging panel that comprised international telecom professionals and regional industry peers.

 MTC Group won the three prestigious industry awards including Overall Operator of the Year and New Telecoms Service of the Year for "One Network", the world's first borderless mobile network in Africa.

Dr. Saad's life-long dedication to the telecoms industry and to Africa has put an Arab telecom company on the radar screens of many governments, major financial institutions, competitor telco companies and media organizations.

"I would like to thank the organizers as well as the esteemed panel of judges for their recognition of MTC as we continue to fulfill our vision of becoming global telecommunications company," said Dr. Al Barrak.

Commenting on the service which is the first of its kind in the world, The Economist said: 'Celtel has, in effect, created a unified market of the kind that regulators can only dream about in Europe.'

Dr. Al Barrak joined MTC in 2002 and in the course of five years, the Group has expanded from a one country operator in Kuwait with 600,000 customers to a mobile operator whose geographic coverage spans across the Middle East and Africa. MTC's capitalization has multiplied more than 10 times since his appointment to exceed US $30 billion (August 2007).

Last year MTC Group reported revenues of US $4.167 billion while profits rose to US$1,051 billion for 2006, a five fold increase since 2003.
