Lorryload of medical supplies off to Sierra Leone

Lorryload of medical supplies off to Sierra Leone

A LORRYLOAD of surplus medical supplies from the Conquest Hospital has been shipped to Hastings' namesake twin town in Sierra Leone.

The goods were donated by doctors and nurses and sent to the impoverished nation last week.
Some items were also contributed by Eastbourne District General Hospital and Benenden Hospital in Kent.
Derek Tomblin, chairman of the Hastings Sierra Leone Twinning Association, said: "We're very grateful to all who helped get this very valuable equipment together.
"Out thanks also go to Henry and Sam Gastal, who gave us a place to store the supplies at Britannia Industrial Estate, and to Simon Travena of Ridge West Garage, who gave us the use of a lorry to transport it up to London."
He added the twinning assocation had reluctantly decided not to send any more goods in this way, because the cost of shipping them to Sierra Leone was so high.
A single container was £3,000, and this money could be used better to build and equip a proper medical centre in Hastings Sierra Leone, he said.
The association will hold a stall at Priory Meadow on October 20, from 9am to 5.30pm, when details of its recent trip to Sierra Leone will be revealed.
