EU hopes for enhanced political dialogue with Sierra Leone

The European Union (EU) on Friday expressed its hope for future close cooperation and enhanced political dialogue with Sierra Leone under newly elected President Ernest Bai Koroma.
In a statement issued by the EU's Portuguese presidency, the EU welcomed the peaceful, orderly and transparent electoral process that has followed the presidential runoff on Sept. 8. The final election results were announced on Sept. 17.
The EU praised the positive role played by the National Electoral Commission and some other key institutions in the Sierra Leone electoral process.
"The EU will be closely engaged in promoting a peaceful and prosperous future for Sierra Leone and its people," the statement said.
Koroma of the All People's Congress Party won the presidential runoff by winning 54.6 percent of the total valid votes cast, against the 45.4 percent obtained by Vice-President Solomon Berewa of the Sierra Leone People's Party, the National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone announced on Monday.
