Pakistani rescuers rush to Sierra Leone freighter with 12 crew sinking in Arabian Sea

KARACHI, Pakistan – A ship carrying scrap metal from Iraq to India was sinking Monday in the Arabian Sea, and a Pakistan coast guard aircraft was scrambled to aid the 12-member crew, an official said.

The Sierra Leone-flagged ship, the MV Maryam Trans, issued a distress call to the Maritime Security Agency, saying it was sinking about 150 miles south of Karachi, said Lt. Cmdr. Attiqur Rehman, an agency spokesman.

The aircraft left Karachi with a life boat to drop near the ship. The crew, made up mostly of Indians, was unable to use the cargo ship's own life boats.

It was not clear what caused the ship to sink.
