EU signs agreement with Govt. to support National Elections Commission

The European Union Delegation in Sierra Leone has signed financial agreement with the government to support the operation of the National Electoral Commission.

The seven-point-five million United States Dollars agreement is part of the EU Delegation’s continuous support to sustain the United Nations Development Programme basket fund for the electoral process.

At a news conference held at European Union Delegation office in Freetown, Head of Delegation, Hans Allden,  described the support to the National Electoral Commission as a critical step to the achievement of the poverty reduction and the Millennium Development Goals.
He said that  the Department for International Development, Irish Aid and the EU have agreed to the restructuring of NEC through a   common basket fund managed by the UNDP in order to support  electoral reform in Sierra Leone.

In response, the Minister of Development and Economic Planning Mohamed Darammy said  the agreement was a support to the rehabilitation NEC. Mr. Darammy noted that one of the ideals promoted by the EU is good governance and transparent elections.
